Four new Palfinger cranes in the Independent Line Services fleet are proving invaluable tools when it comes to keeping the electricity network in Canterbury running.
Independent Line Services is a power line construction and maintenance company working in the Canterbury area with the fault response contract for Banks Peninsula. When the lights go out these boys have to respond and repair in quick time, no matter what the conditions or terrain. They need their gear to work first time, every time and to be able to operate at the limits of its capabilities for prolonged periods.
Managing director Matt Southorn says performance and reliability are the keys in his industry and the Palfinger cranes have these attributes in bucket loads.
Independent Line Services has used Palfinger cranes since it began operations in 1995, originally running a second-hand Isuzu truck and Palfinger 7000A. Today it owns five Palfinger cranes, including two PK10000s, a PK11502 and a PK16502. "And we still have the old original 7000A - we just can't part with it."
Matt says while these cranes aren't huge, they are exactly suited to the task of building power lines. Their lighter weight means more payload and smaller trucks, which is a huge plus when it comes to accessing difficult sites.
The cranes have been rear mounted to three new Hino FGs (two of them double cab) and one 4x4 Hino GT.
Matt says he looked at a wide variety of cranes from opposition companies before settling on Palfinger. "We had a history with Palfinger and our guys knew them and trusted them. They like the smoothness of operation and reliability - they do what they say they're going to do and the combination of the new Hinos means the boys feel like they have a Rolls Royce line truck."
All the cranes have been fitted with radio remote control which means the operator is always in the "best and safest position" when working around the live power network. "After the performance and service we have had from Palfinger it would be a big call to change brands now," Matt says.
The cranes have been fitted to the trucks by transport engineering company Seaview Custom Engineering Ltd in Christchurch in conjunction with the building of the specialist truck bodies required for lines work.
